Scotland Win their first Golf World Cup

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren will take the World Cup back to the home of golf for the first time after beating the United States on the third hole of a sudden death playoff on Sunday.

A fourth par of the day at the 18th proved enough for the Scots to defeat overnight leaders Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, pick up a cheque for $800,000 each and make amends for their own playoff defeat by Germany last year.

"To come back after a playoff loss last year and win is superb, particularly as my playoff record is rubbish," Montgomerie told reporters after finally getting his hands on the John Hopkins trophy at the ninth attempt.

The Americans had looked set for victory when the Scots twice found the sand on the first extra hole but Warren nailed a 12-foot putt for par and Slocum just missed a seven-foot birdie effort.

Slocum had successfully drained a birdie putt just two feet shorter at the same green to force the playoff, giving the Americans a five-under 67 to match the Scots, who had shot a superb six-under 66, on 25-under for the tournament.

Both teams missed long birdie efforts at the second extra hole before Weekley failed with a 15-footer when he was putting for par to keep the match alive.

The Americans, both making their debuts in the 54-year-old tournament, had led by a shot after all three previous rounds in their pursuit of a 24th World Cup victory for their country...

My tip South Africa finished tied for 4th and my outside tip Thailand failed to make any impact in the harder alternate shot days. I feel slightly sorry for the US team who led after every round. I was also very disappointed with my team (Australia) who are did not exactly set the tournament alight. I guess I will have to get used to that with the golf world cup scheduled smack bang on top of the Australasian PGA tour.

Golf World Cup - Day 2 Wrap

The American duo of Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum held on to a one-stroke lead in the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup shooting a 3-under 69 in Friday's second round to lead England and Scotland.

England's Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren both shot 68 to trail by a shot on 13-under 131. The South African team of Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen were another shot back after a 69. Three teams were three behind -- Denmark (68), Italy (68) and Germany (71).

After a low-scoring day Thursday in the easier better-ball format, scores soared in Friday alternate-shot play at the Mission Hills Golf Club in southern China. Though this is a stroke-play event, match-play rules are in force....

The American team is looking very good at the moment and will be hard to stop. Germany are still looking good as is Scotland and England with my tip South Africa still very much in contention.

It will be very interesting to see how it all pans out. My outside tip Thailand are still in with a show too...hmmmm

The United States team has the early lead at the Omega Mission Hills Golf World Cup shooting an 11 under in the first day fourball (best ball) event. 1 shot further back is Germany with a glut of teams on 9 under including my outside tip Thailand.

Golf World Cup Explained: Preview

There are 28 countries vying for Golf World Cup and the event has had a revamp. It is now scheduled to be played at the Mission Hills Golf Club in China for the next 10 years and the directors will be looking to establish the tournament as one of Asia's top sporting events each year. With most of the worlds top golfers missing it will lack some of the interest, but it should be worth watching anyway.

Eligibility (taken from pgatour.com):
The leading 18 available players, each native born citizens of different countries, from the Official World Golf Ranking on Monday 3rd September 2007 qualified.

These 18 players selected a player of their choosing from the same country, provided such player was ranked within the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as of 3rd September 2007.

Ten countries from the World Qualifiers held between 27th – 30th September 2007, completed the field of 28 nations - five from the Asian qualifier, and five from the Aruba qualifier.

Format:
The Championship is a 72-hole stroke play team event with each team comprising of two players. The first and third days are fourball (best ball) play and the second and final days are foursomes play. A total of 28 teams, each one of different nationality, are competing in the 2007 Omega Mission Hills World Cup.

My tip
Spain was going to be my tip to take home the world cup, but Jose Maria Olazabal, who designed the course, has pulled out due to rheumatism. I am now tipping South Africa to take home the cup, with my outside tip being Thailand.
